How secure is your garage?

When we are talking to businesses we always consider outbuildings but do home-owners consider their outbuildings – garages and sheds?

A garage is a favourite target for burglars not least for the valuables they contain – cars, bikes, tools – which are all easy ‘to get rid of’, but also because they often make access to you home easier too.  Garages are also unlikely to be occupied at night another point in their favour from a burglar’s point of view!

So here are our tips for making sure that you are protected from unexpected burglary of your garage:

• Change the entry code on your garage door
• Make sure you always close and lock the door
• The same with any windows in the garage – have you got locks on them?
• Check that the door is solid with no loose panels
• Or damaged corners that could make it easier to pry open
• Do the same for windows or other doors in the garage
• Use heat or motion sensing outdoor lights as these are a known deterrent
• The first detect body heat whilst the second detect movement
• Install CCTV as a real deterrent – this will capture pictures of any intruder
• This will also make identification and capture easier
